Clinical Consultation & Training

For more than twenty years, Dr. Northrop had the great privilege of serving as a clinical supervisor and eventually Director of Clinical Training at Sharp HealthCare, in San Diego. Prior to that she was the Director of Quality Management and Professional Development for a large nursing home consultation group - guiding hundreds of licensed professionals as they self-assessed and built their proficiency in serving older adults. At Sharp she trained and supervised more than 200 psychology graduate students, MFT, LPC, and MSW students, music therapy interns, doctoral psychology interns, and post-doctoral fellows – amassing more than 10,000 hours of clinical supervision experience. She launched a supervision consultation group and an ACT consultation group and co-created a cultural competence seminar at Sharp that flourish to this day. She led Sharp healthcare through TWO APA reaccreditations, both of which resulted in reacreditations of maximum duration. She co-created the Aging in Context ACT Consultation within the Association of Contextual Behavioral Science. She is regularly invited to guest-lecture on clinical supervision in local graduate programs.

Dr. Northrop specializes in helping clinicians become proficient in ACT across the adult lifespan and in geropsychology across a range of theoretical and developmental models and evidence-based treatments. She is highly skilled in helping clinicians develop their own voice. She is passionate about helping clinicians thrive when they themselves live with mental health challenges or neurodiversity. She prides herself on her commitment to authenticity, kindness, humility, flexibility, and empiricism in her actions as a supervisor. She is passionate about helping clinicians understand their own complex identities, helping them examine and address biases and blind spots, and helping them work effectively with people who are similar to and different from them.
